moving history – Festival of historical films

- is the first German festival to present documentary and fictional films with historical themes from current and past cinema and television productions.

- picks up the continuing popularity of media images of history. These not only shape our notions of the past, but also influence our perception of the present and our expectations of the future.

- offers a film and a supporting programme, whereby the film programme consists of formats such as a competition or award ceremony, a thematic retrospective, premieres and workshop discussions and the supporting programme consists of a master class, a scientific symposium, education events and a party.

- aims to open up a space in which filmmakers can engage dialogues with experts from various disciplines and with a broad audience. For this reason, the film talks after each screening are an essential part of the festival format.

- takes place in Potsdam. The Brandenburg state capital and UNESCO world cultural heritage city offers an ideal environment for the festival as a venue for German and European history as well as a lively media location with over one hundred years of tradition.

- is under the patronage of the renowned director and screenwriter Margarethe von Trotta. In her films, she repeatedly deals with personalities and epochs of German history. Von Trotta has received numerous domestic and foreign film awards, including the Federal Film Prize and the Golden Lion in Venice.
