In this first series of German-language publications about Eastern European film, each volume is devoted to a country, highlighting both individual and representative examples of the most prominent film classics; films are cultural artefacts, their images and stories always providing insights into the culture and society of the respective country. The aim of the series is thus to bring the film production of the Eastern European countries, as well as the changes in historical fortune of these countries, closer to the German-speaking public by means of their film classics.

In the second half of the 20th century, the Polish cinema was considered among the most innovative in the world. Nonetheless, most Polish feature films are today known only to specialists. Wide international recognition, however, is still accorded to the films of Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieślowski and Roman Polański. The first volume of the series therefore presents the 25 most important Polish films since 1945. As is fitting, the academically more scholarly and more popular contributions are by authors from Slavic studies and the studies of culture, media and film.
