Wittgenstein's pictorial thinking follows on from the current efforts to develop both a general theory of images and a theory of the image of science. The treasure trove of Wittgenstein's pictorial-theoretical insights and the special nature of his pictorial thinking bring new impulses to the discussion. Ulrich Richtmeyer shows that the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who was generally recognized as a philosopher of language and canonized over the course of many years in accordance with the reception of the language, was also a very productive and independent pictorial philosopher. This is by no means a provocative thesis of a shift in media preference in the philosopher's interpretative order, but rather two other, quite down-to-earth goals that can fortunately be combined: firstly, an expansion of our understanding of his philosophical oeuvre as a whole and secondly, an enrichment of our understanding of the genuine mediality of the image.
