Workshop “Film-Konzepte: Hans Jürgen Syberberg”
Hans Jürgen Syberberg belongs generationally to the so-called Oberhausen Group and to the subsequent Young or New German Cinema following the Manifesto. Ultimately, however, he was the one who, despite having learned his craft in television, was least willing to make artistic compromises and least willing to bow to contemporary trends. As a result, he spent over two decades in intense public disputes with the German-language press and the domestic film industry. Consequently, among the internationally recognized names of this generation, he has the smallest body of work and is today the least present.
This workshop is therefore dedicated to a rediscovery of Syberberg’s work, not least his early films, and is intended to culminate in a special thematic issue of the journal Film-Konzepte.
