International Conference on Information Design and Data Visualization in Potsdam
The Information+ conference brings together researchers and practitioners in information design and visualization to discuss common questions and current challenges in these rapidly changing fields. Through a historic exhibition, a diverse program of lectures and hands-on workshops, the international conference provides a comprehensive overview of the past, present and future of these disciplines. Unlike discipline-specific gatherings, Information+ 2018 seeks to foster productive exchanges amongst the variety of people involved in the theories, practices, and pedagogies of analyzing and communicating information.
Information+ 2018 includes a workshop day (19 Oct), a two-day conference (20–21 Oct) and an exhibition of historic information design (19 Oct–14.Dec). 250 participants from research and practice are expected. The contributions are also aimed at experts in the media, creative industry, technology sector and cultural sector. The program committee is composed of 52 renowned experts from 11 countries. The 149 submissions underwent a peer review process.
The conference program is framed by keynotes given by Sandra Rendgen (independent art historian and author), Ron Morrison (University of Southern California), Fernanda Viégas & Martin Wattenberg (Google PAIR) and Reuben Fischer-Baum & Chiqui Esteban (The Washington Post). On the day before the conference, participants can engage in hands-on and critical workshops that focus on data preparation or data traces, invite them to tell stories, go on data walks through Potsdam or dive into digitized cultural collections. The exhibition “Image Factories. Infographics 1920-1945,” in collaboration with the German Museum of Books and Writing of the German National Library, presents the works of Otto and Marie Neurath and Fritz Kahn as historic predecessors of information visualization.
The Information+ conference takes place biennially and is being held from 19 to 21 October 2018 at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (FH Potsdam), which was the first university to offer a study program in interface design in Germany. It has since gained international reputation for their design-oriented information visualization research.
This year’s conference is organized by Marian Dörk (FH Potsdam) and Isabel Meirelles (OCAD University), with special support from the Urban Complexity Lab at FH Potsdam. The team is keen to expand the links between the informatics and design ‘camps’ of visualization research and to foster the exchange between theory and practice. Prof. Meirelles is involved in building a bridge between the first conference in Vancouver (June 2016) and the sequel in Potsdam. An important addition this year is a needs-based diversity scholarship program aimed at increasing the participation of traditionally underrepresented or historically marginalized groups.
