Workshop “(Meta)Data in Film, Video, and Moving Images – Research, Cleaning, Visualization with OpenRefine and Excel”
Competent handling of data is becoming increasingly important in the humanities—especially in the field of digital humanities, where data-based approaches can open up new perspectives on established areas of research. The QUADRIGA Data Competence Center, in cooperation with ZeM, is hosting a two-day workshop focusing on (meta)data in film, video, and moving images.
The workshop consists of talks, discussions, exercises, and the opportunity to further develop your own research based on data. This takes place in the context of humanities research and, specifically, research on moving images. Participants will increase their data literacy in handling metadata and in cleaning and visualizing it.
To this end, various types of metadata will be presented during the workshop, with a focus on filmographic information. Participants will practice searching in various catalogs and databases. A theoretical introduction to data cleansing will be followed by a practical exercise with OpenRefine using a sample data set. The workshop concludes with an insight into data visualization, discussing its role and benefits in research. Building on this, participants will create simple visualizations using Microsoft Excel or similar programs.
Experts introduce the individual topics and are available as contact persons during the subsequent joint discussion and work. Modules from an Open Educational Resource (OER) developed by QUADRIGA are used during the workshop.
Target group
The workshop is open to all interested scholars. It is aimed at film and media scholars, as well as researchers from related disciplines in the humanities.
Participation requirements
No special prior knowledge is required of participants, but an interest in working with data in humanities research contexts is desirable.
Travel Expense Support
A limited number of travel expense grants are available for scholars who do not have their own travel funds. When registering, please let us know if you are interested in receiving support and provide a rough estimate of your expenses.
