Public for Europe! Media change, freedom of the press and media policy
The world of media is changing rapidly. Economic pressure, digital change, populist campaigns, the exercise of political power and a digitally supported disintegration into communicative parallel worlds – all these are factors that feed the current structural change of media audiences. Democratic societies are fundamentally affected by this change.
Because an open society needs public space. It is the place of encounter and exchange, participation and democratic self-determination. An important prerequisite for this is an independent, polyphonic and quality-assured media landscape and a discursive digital space.
At the “Public for Europe” conference, we talk about the pressure which the public media are under today. And about how they can be secured and strengthened for a democratic public in the future. We are organising an exchange and a European meeting on these issues, and not just between experts. The issue concerns us all.
