The series “Capturing the (Game) World” offers insightful talks about the practice, aesthetics, and the history of In-Game Photography as well as hands-on workshops to explore photography in games and in-game photographical techniques.

The Photographer’s Guide to Los Santos

The workshop will take participants on a tour of Los Santos, the simulated version of Los Angeles in the game Grand Theft Auto V. The event will combine a tour of the locations where the most important artistic works of in-game photography have been created, with photographic re-enactment ‘missions’, where the participants will recreate the artworks.

Through this hybrid format, participants will learn about different artists and photographic practices within computer games, and will explore first-hand how to document virtual worlds through a simulated smartphone camera.

This is the third workshop of the series “Capturing the (Game) World” about In-Game Photography, a collaboration of C/O Berlin, DIGAREC, and ZeM. The series “Capturing the (Game) World” started off with the workshop “Computer Games as New Places for Photographic Practice”, followed by the workshop “Ways of Looking & Ways of Playing. Virtual Cameras and Photogrammetry”.

Bio Speakers

Marco De Mutiis works as Digital Curator at Fotomuseum Winterthur and is currently a PhD researcher at the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image at London South Bank University. His research focuses on the relationship between computer games and photography, and its implication in the field of digital and networked images. Together with Matteo Bittanti, he has recently curated the exhibition How to Win at Photography – Image-making as Play.

Dr. Sebastian Möring is an assistant professor in European Media Studies (a joint study program of the University of Potsdam and the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany) and head coordinator of the DIGAREC (Digital Games Research Center of the University of Potsdam) as well as subproject leader in the BMBF-funded research project “Forschen|Lernen Digital (FoLD).” In 2021 he was awarded with the teaching award of the state of Brandenburg for the seminar “Exhibiting Nature Digitally – Exhibiting in the Digital Realm”. His research focuses on the philosophy and aesthetics of computer games, in-game photography, green game studies, and the implementation of games in educational contexts. Sebastian earned his Ph.D. from the Center for Computer Games Research at the IT University of Copenhagen with a thesis on the metaphor discourse in game studies. He researched existential structures of computer games as postdoc at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Sebastian is member of the steering group of the Gamephilosophy Network, organizer of the annual conference Philosophy of Computer Games, a member of the Brandenburg Centre for Media Studies as well as an associate member of the research group “SENSING. On the Knowledge of Sensitive Media”.
