Workshop “Phantoms of the New German Cinema”
We cordially invite you to a collegial exchange on “Phantoms of the New German Cinema” on November 20, 2023 in Potsdam. The topic may be interpreted generously; it is about interesting and equally invisible persons, projects and topics that have to do with the New German Cinema or the conception of an independent auteur film in post-war cinema in the broadest sense. We do this by means of short impulse lectures, discussion rounds as well as in free time slots that allow for more informal conversations.
The idea for this workshop grew out of a paper recently submitted for publication by our colleague and collaborative partner, American literary scholar Megan Ewing (Ferdinand Khittl’s The Parallel Road. Ecological thinking and the implicated subject). Here, Megan dealt with one of the strangest films of the New German Cinema, “Die Parallelstraße” and its no less interesting director, Ferdinand Khittl (1959). Khittl was the one who had read the famous “Oberhausen Manifesto” in 1962. Heiko Christians and Kai Knörr first published the experimental film in 2009 in the “Edition Filmmuseum”. Megan Ewing has now recently delivered an amazing reinterpretation.
In the workshop we want to bring together colleagues who will shed light on those forgotten people, projects and themes that could be understood as “phantoms of the New German Cinema”.
The workshop will be held in German with contributions in English.
